You can claim overpaid income tax for up to four years back, and the quickest route is free: Revenue myAccount. In 2026 that covers the tax years 2022 to 2025. Returns must be submitted within four years of the end of the tax year, so the 2022 year closes on 31 December 2026. No agent is needed.
A refund arises when Revenue's records show you paid more tax than your credits and reliefs allowed. It is not automatic: for years that have already ended, you usually have to submit an income tax return before Revenue will review and repay.
Steps to claim through myAccount
- Sign in to Revenue myAccount and complete two-factor authentication.
- Under PAYE Services, choose "Review your tax for the previous 4 years" and select the year.
- Request the Preliminary End of Year Statement, which shows whether Revenue's records suggest you overpaid or underpaid. It is usually available from mid-January of the following year.
- Choose to complete your income tax return. Add any credits or reliefs you did not claim at the time, such as rent, health expenses, remote working or pension contributions you paid yourself.
- Submit the return. Your Statement of Liability, which gives the final figure, normally appears in My Documents within about five working days.
- If a refund is due, Revenue pays it by cheque or bank transfer. Provide your bank details to receive it faster.
Check each of the four years separately. Overpayments from changed employment or a missing credit can occur in some years and not others.
Have these to hand before you start, so the return can be finished in one sitting:
- Your PPS number and the bank account details (IBAN) for any payment.
- The Employment Detail Summary for each year, which shows pay and deductions reported by your employers.
- Receipts or certificates for health expenses, rent payments and pension contributions you made yourself.
- Your landlord's details and the tenancy registration number if you are claiming the rent credit.
Common reasons you may be owed money
- Unclaimed credits. The rent tax credit was €500 for an individual in 2022 and 2023 and €1,000 from 2024. A renter with enough tax liability who never claimed could recover up to €3,000 across the four years (€500 + €500 + €1,000 + €1,000), provided the tenancy qualified.
- Health expenses. Relief is generally at 20%, so €1,200 of qualifying costs returns €240. Money reimbursed by insurance does not count.
- Emergency tax. If you started a job without Revenue holding your details, you may have been taxed on a basis that over-collected. Once Revenue issues a cumulative basis for you, your employer refunds the over-collected income tax and USC on your next pay day; if you left the job and are unemployed, claim the income tax and USC refund directly from Revenue.
- Part-year employment. Gaps in work, redundancy or a period on social welfare can leave you with unused credits.
- Pension contributions paid to a PRSA or as AVCs that were not relieved through payroll.
- Wrong PRSI rate. Citizens Information says a refund of PRSI deducted at the wrong rate can be claimed for the last four complete tax years.
Paper claims and exclusions
If you do not have a myAccount, you can request a Statement of Liability by completing Form 12 or the simplified Form 12S and posting it to your local tax office. The paper form does not pre-fill your Revenue record, so you must supply that information yourself. If you cannot use online services at all, Citizens Information says to write to your local tax office and mark the envelope "Exclusion request".
Self-assessed taxpayers, such as the self-employed, claim by filing a Form 11 in ROS. See self-employed tax basics for the main dates.
If you turn out to owe tax
The same review can show an underpayment. A balance under €6,000 can be paid through myAccount, or Revenue can reduce your tax credits over up to four years. Above €6,000 you pay through myAccount or contact Revenue about repayment options. You can also declare extra income, such as rental income or casual work, on the return.
Revenue may ask for proof behind a claim. Upload or keep receipts for health expenses and AVC certificates. Original remote working bills and receipts should be kept for six years if you do not upload them. The Employment Detail Summary in myAccount is accepted as proof of income.
Do you need a refund agent?
You do not. The Revenue route costs nothing and takes a few minutes if your details are up to date. Some commercial services will file the same return for a fee. If you use one, check the charge in writing before you sign and compare it with the expected refund. Before starting, read tax credits in Ireland to see which credits might apply, and pension tax relief if you pay into a pension yourself.
Frequently asked questions
How far back can I claim?
Four years. In 2026 you can claim for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, and each return must be submitted within four years of the end of its tax year.
Do I need an agent to claim?
No. You can claim for free through Revenue myAccount or on paper using Form 12S.
How long does a refund take to arrive?
Revenue's guidance does not promise a fixed time. Your Statement of Liability usually appears within about five working days, and the refund follows by bank transfer or cheque.
Can I claim if I am self-employed?
Yes, through your Form 11 return in ROS, which includes the rent credit, pension relief and other claims for the year.
